Design Competition: Group Personalities

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator is a tool for understanding our own personalities; the aim of this session was to understand our own personalities and how we then work in a group.

We used 16 Personalities to take a quick test and I thought it was going to be a little bit horoscope-y and be very general. However I was told I have the ISTJ personality and I felt personally victimised because it was so accurate as much as I’d like to say it wasn’t…

When ISTJs say they are going to get something done, they do it, meeting their obligations no matter the personal cost, and they are baffled by people who don’t hold their own word in the same respect. Combining laziness and dishonesty is the quickest way to get on ISTJs’ bad side. Consequently, people with the ISTJ personality type often prefer to work alone, or at least have their authority clearly established by hierarchy, where they can set and achieve their goals without debate or worry over other’s reliability. [From 16 Personalities]

Strengths:

  • Honest & Direct
  • Strong-willed & Dutiful
  • Very Responsible
  • Calm & Practical
  • Create & Enforce Order
  • Jacks-of-all-trades

Weaknesses:

  • Stubborn
  • Insensitive
  • Always by the Book
  • Judgemental
  • Often Unreasonably Blame Themselves

I think the strengths and weaknesses some me up completely especially when in the working environment. I do however think that these aren’t as relevant when in the context of working in a group however due to the different of getting paid at work and working towards a project in university. For example I’m very to the book and enforcing of order whilst I’m at work because I see that everyone should as they’re there to earn money whereas in the context of university I’m a bit more laid back because I understand that everyone has a lot on their plate with university, work and social lives. It’s nice to see there’s a reason that I’m a jobsworth and my colleagues will laugh when I tell them!

After looking at personalities we come up with an action plan/timeline of everything we need to get done for the Summer Show. I think if our group were to win the pitching of our ideas that we would be in a good position to start funding and promoting it.
